Abstract

Hospitality is not a moral virtue; it is a component of the hominization of man; an integral part of “becoming human”. More than a responsibility and solidarity, hospitality is an openness to the shared community of becoming other. These different concepts are problematized in this essay toward a new perspective on this philosophical problem.

A contemporary and direct interlocutor of Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze, and Félix Guattari, Schérer was a leading scholar of the work and thought of Charles Fourier; he formulated an original perspective on the philosophy of immanence by intertwining issues of societal education based on the passions, a critique of the modern system of childhood, the assertion of a philosophical anarchism guided by the idea of radical hospitality, and a reorientation of the concept of utopia as a passionate compass for reality.
