Masculinity and affection of black men in Brazil: a genealogical analysis of power relations

Abstract

This research investigates the historical and social construction of Black men's masculinity and affectivity in Brazil, analyzing the power dynamics that shape these identities in contexts of racial and gender oppression. Using the genealogical method, the study traces the transformations of these concepts over time, aiming to reveal how structural racism and colonialism have shaped representations of the Black male body, particularly concerning virility and dehumanization. The methodology includes the analysis of literary works, historical documents, and media representations, as well as an examination of the power relations that configure masculinity and affectivity. The results highlight the marginalization of Black men within hegemonic standards of masculinity, as well as the symbolic violence and sexualization that persist in contemporary representations. However, forms of resistance and re-signification also emerge, both individually and collectively, seeking to break stereotypes and create new narratives of masculinity and affectivity, promoting the emancipation and authenticity of Black men.
